Chinese Pepper Steak with Onions

Ingredients

  • 450 g ribeye or flank steak, thinly sliced against the grain
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil, divided
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 bell pepper (green or red), thinly sliced
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 teaspoon grated ginger
  • 60 ml soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons oyster sauce
  • 1 tablespoon hoisin sauce (optional, for a sweet touch)
  • 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 60 ml beef or chicken broth
  • 1 teaspoon cornstarch dissolved in 1 tablespoon water (optional, for thickening)
  • Cooked rice, for serving
