Festive Spiced Red Wine Sangria with Cranberries

This festive spiced red wine sangria is a fresh, aromatic twist on classic winter drinks, combining fruity red wine, citrus, warm spices, and sparkling bubbles. Light and refreshing yet deeply seasonal, it balances the sweetness of orange and maple syrup with the tartness of cranberries and the gentle warmth of cinnamon, star anise, and cloves. Prepared in advance and finished just before serving, it is ideal for holiday gatherings and shared moments.

Serves: 6 people

Ingredients

  • 1 bottle (75 cl) light, fruity red wine (Gamay, Merlot, or Pinot Noir)
  • 100 ml Grand Marnier, Cointreau, or brandy
  • 250 ml orange juice (or cranberry juice for extra acidity)
  • 2 organic oranges, thinly sliced
  • 1 red apple, diced (skin on)
  • 150 g fresh cranberries
  • 3 cinnamon sticks
  • 3 star anise
  • 4 cloves
  • 2 tablespoons maple syrup or brown sugar
  • 500 ml sparkling water or lemonade (added just before serving)

Instructions

  1. Start the maceration. In a large bowl or pitcher, pour in the red wine, followed by the chosen spirit (Grand Marnier, Cointreau, or brandy) and the fruit juice. Add the maple syrup or brown sugar and stir thoroughly until it is completely dissolved. This step creates a balanced liquid base where sweetness, alcohol, and fruit acidity are evenly distributed.
  2. Add fruits and spices. Wash the oranges carefully and slice them into thin rounds. Cut the apple into small cubes, keeping the skin on for color and texture. Add the orange slices, apple pieces, and fresh cranberries to the wine mixture. Drop in the cinnamon sticks, star anise, and cloves, stirring gently so the spices and fruit are fully immersed and begin releasing their aromas.
  3. Let it rest. Cover the container and place it in the refrigerator for at least 4 hours, or preferably overnight. This resting time is essential: the cinnamon and star anise slowly infuse the wine, the fruit softens slightly, and the flavors become rounder and more harmonious without losing freshness.
